As our communities prepare to reopen schools safely, Analytic Measures Inc. (AMI) is turning its attention to restart and recovery, as well. Our team is closely following the guidance of the Council of Chief State School Officers, and we are listening closely to educators as we work to make sure all our young readers continue to build and strengthen their literacy skills. 

 

As schools and districts grapple with how to implement remote learning, our team has been in daily conversations with educators about using Moby.Read, our fully-automated oral reading fluency assessment. Research-backed and standards-aligned, Moby.Read provides benchmark assessments that enable teachers to view students’ progression over the school year for critical reading skills—accurate reading rate, accuracy, comprehension, and expression—while also providing reading level information. Drawing on the feedback we’ve been receiving from educators, we’ve made several enhancements to Moby.Read. It can now conveniently be used to support oral reading fluency assessment with in-person, remote, and hybrid learning models. For example:

 

  • Easy remote testing: Moby.Read was originally designed to be administered in schools or classrooms. To address the challenges of remote test administration during the COVID school closures, we deployed a new feature that allows teachers to generate single-use tokens for Moby.Read assessments at home. Students can now simply initiate a test with their unique token, while teachers receive immediate scores and access to students’ audio performance of passage readings, retells, and short-answer questions. 

  • Running record forms: One of the use cases and features of Moby.Read is the immediate availability of students’ audio performances, which teachers can listen to and use for their own analysis to guide instruction. To better facilitate this process, AMI has made all scored passages available as running record forms.

  • Progress monitoring assessment: As a complement to Moby.Read’s benchmark assessment, we are developing a progress monitoring assessment that will support frequent oral reading fluency checks as part of Response to Intervention (RTI), which further allows teachers to track and guide reading development. This progress monitoring tool will be available this fall.
